The synthesis of C14-lipids in rabbit atheromatous lesions.

چکیده
Studies of the accumulation of phospholipids in the aortic intima of cholesterol-fed rabbits have been reported previously from this laboratory (l-4). After P3z-phosphate injection, it was found that the phospholipid specific activity was higher in aortic intima than in plasma, and that this difference in specific activity was accentuated in eviscerated animals. Although this study gave evidence for the synthesis of the phosphate moiety of phospholipid in the aorta, the site at which the carbon skeleton of the molecule was synthesized still had to be established. In the present study rabbits were treated by injection with sodium acetate-l-Cl4 to measure the incorporation of this label into the phospholipids and other lipids of plasma and intima.

The synthesis of phospholipids in human atheromatous lesions.
A LTHOUGH the development of atheromatous lesions in the aorta, coronary arteries, cerebral arteries, and other large peripheral arteries of man has been correlated with a high level of serum cholesterol, cholesterol-to-phospholipid ratios, beta-lipoproteins, or Sf 10-100 lipoproteins, little direct evidence is available that the accumulation of lipids in the atheromatous aorta of man is a dire...
متن کاملComparison of the lipid compositions of the aortic lesions in rabbits given different atherogenic diets.
I . The compositions of the lipids in the atheromatous lesions of rabbits have been studied in an experiment in which two groups of rabbits (twelvelgroup) were given different atherogenic diets for a period of 38 weeks. One group of rabbits was given a diet in which 35 % of the total calories was derived from butterfat and the other group was given a diet in which 48 yo of the total calories wa...
متن کاملLipids deposited in human atheromatous lesions induce apoptosis of human vascular smooth muscle cells.
To clarify whether lipids deposited in human atheromatous lesions induce apoptosis of vascular smooth muscle cells (SMC) and to identify the main component in deposited lipids responsible for inducing apoptosis, we examined the effect of lipids extracted from human atheromatous lesions on apoptosis of cultured SMC and analyzed the content of cholesterol in the lipids. When lipids extracted from...
متن کاملUptake and release of cholesterol by rabbit atheromatous lesions.
• We have previously shown, in the atheromatous rabbit aorta, that cholesterol influx can be measured by the accumulation of radioactive cholesterol into the atheromatous lesions, and that, in the period up to 60 days after the commencement of cholesterol feeding, this influx is greater than the net accumulation of cholesterol in the thoracic aorta. The entry of radioactive cholesterol into the...
متن کاملRed cells, hemoglobin, heme, iron, and atherogenesis.
OBJECTIVE We investigated whether red cell infiltration of atheromatous lesions promotes the later stages of atherosclerosis. METHODS AND RESULTS We find that oxidation of ferro (FeII) hemoglobin in ruptured advanced lesions occurs generating ferri (FeIII) hemoglobin and via more extensive oxidation ferrylhemoglobin (FeIII/FeIV=O). The protein oxidation marker dityrosine accumulates in compli...
